Veliky Novgorod
It is a city with an aura of mysteriousness and enchantment. It is righteously called city-museum under the open sky. Veliky Novgorod is situated 190 km from Saint Petersburg. The magnificent architectural ensembles on the Volkhov river’s banks, the masterpieces of monumental painting of XI — XVII attract each year thousands of tourists from all over the world. Since its very foundation Novgorod was an important outpost on the north-western boarders of Russian lands. From XII to XV it was a capital of a large European state – Novgorod Popular Assembly Republic, center of political, economic, cultural and religious life of the medieval Russia. It is one of the centers of spiritual life of modern Russia. Within the bounds of the city there are three active orthodox monasteries, the most ancient of which is Saint Yury Monastery founded in 1030 by the principle Yaroslav the Wise. |
