Russia  is a country of contrasts with a rich centuries-old history and culture. The capital of Russia is Moscow.

This  city is a heart of Russia and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Each year the capital is visited by millions of tourists eager to see with their own eyes the Kremlin, the Red Square, Saint Basil Cathedral and Christ the Savior Cathedral, the Danilov and the Novodevichiy Monasteries, the Bolshoi Theatre and the Tretyakov Gallery.

Some architectural and historic and cultural monuments on the territory of the Russian Federation are  on the UN heritage list such as the Moscow Kremlin and the Red Square, historic center of Saint Petersburg and the palace-and-park complexes of its environs, white stone monuments of the ancient Vladimir and Suzdal land and the towns of the Golden Ring of Russia, the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, the Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye, etc.

Geographic position, nature

Russia boarders on Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the North-west; on Byelorussia and Poland — in the North; on Ukraine in the South-West; with Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in the South; with China, Mongolia and North Korea — in the South-East.

The frontiers of Russia are washed by the seas of Arctic Ocean — Barents Sea, White Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea,  East-Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea in the North; Baltic Sea in the North-West; Black, Azov and Caspian Sea  — in the South-West; Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk and Japan Sea in the East.

The territory of Russia is divided into 11 time zones, from Chukchi Peninsula to the Kaliningrad Oblast. The country extends for almost 4 thousand kilometers from the North to the South, and for more than 9 thousand kilometers from the West to the East. Russia occupies the eighth part of the world land.
